CAPE TOWN ORANJEZICHT CITY FARM MARKET

By | February 2nd, 2017

Not only is Cape Town known for the incredible Table Mountain – the Seventh Natural Wonder in the World – but Cape Town is also known for being South Africa’s main “foodie capital”.

In short, the Oranjezicht City Farm is what the name suggests, a quaint farm situated in the middle of the city. Oranjezicht was the largest farm during the 19th century and was the main source of fresh fruits and vegetables for passing ships, colonies and settlements during that time. By 1901, the farm was converted into a housing council, and by 1957 the homestead was demolished and taken over by a bowling green, which later became abandoned.

Today the Oranjezicht City Farm is in the hands of the passionate community, who have taken the once desolate piece of land and moulded into something that would prove to be both enlightening and useful. The farm is a natural cohesion for communities as it provides skills and development for the unemployed, educates locals about food and the environment, and is a unique concept of a glorified piece of paradise within an urban, bustling city. It works really well!

The Oranjezicht City Farm Market is located at Granger Bay, near the V&A Waterfront and is a firm favourite amongst the locals. It is here that you will be sure to spend a good couple of hours, taking in all the sights, smells and behold the beauty and celebration when a community comes together. You will be amazed by the abundance of organic fresh fruits, vegetables, vibrant flowers (some of which can only be found in the Western Cape), exquisite jewellery and artisan products.

The market caters for all, whether you’re vegan, gluten-intolerant or none of the above. A must-try is the bacon and cheese samoosas – a fried or baked pastry with a sweet or savoury filling, or the steamed vegetarian Kimchi bun. Sit and mingle at the market’s communal tables and be sure to take home some fresh cheese and charcuterie for later indulgence.

The Oranjezicht Market Day is open every Saturday from 09:00 am till 14:00 pm. All funds made at the market go towards financing the Oranjezicht City Farm.
