By | February 6th, 2018

Recently voted on Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List 2018 for being one of the best hotels in the world, Babylonstoren is a highlight not to be missed when traveling to Cape Town.

Located along the renowned Franschhoek Valley Wine Route, Babylonstoren is an iconic turning point of days gone by. Previously a fruit and wine farm, Babylonstoren dates back to 1692 and was merely 10 years ago when the estate underwent a slight reinvention under the guidance of Karen Roos – past Editor of South Africa’s Elle Decoration.

Babylonstoren’s exterior portrays elements reminiscent of 17th century Cape Dutch architecture – white washed walls, high thatched roofs, wooden shutters and of course, the distinct gables.

Accommodation:

With a relaxed country-feel, soft hues of whites and opulent furnishings; you can be sure that your stay at Babylonstoren will be nothing less than extraordinary. Suites and cottages are provided with well-stocked pantries, exquisite four-poster beds, antique bookshelves filled with fascinating books and floor-to-ceiling windows – plus the views from your private abode are exceptional.

Garden:

Another significant highlight at Babylonstoren are their impeccable gardens, inspired by the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon and Cape Town’s historic Company Gardens. If you’re lucky enough find a reservation at Babel then you certainly won’t be disappointed. At Babel you can expect to be blown away from some of South Africa’s highly acclaimed cuisine. Meals are prepared using organically grown, fresh and seasonal produce from Babylonstoren’s very own gardens. Alas, if you unable to experience Babel then you will be happy to know that there is the option of the Greenhouse Restaurant. Continuing with the estate’s “farm-to-fork” ethos, the Greenhouse offers guests with an assortment of scrumptious salads, baked treats, speciality teas and freshly pressed juices.

Wines:

With highly acclaimed cuisine comes highly acclaimed wines. Babylonstoren offers 13 different grape varieties which include Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir as well as an MCC or sparkling wine wittingly referred to as Sprankel. As a perfect accompaniment, the estate welcomes you to savor their delightful wines, cheese and charcuterie boards at their contemporarily designed Tasting Room.

The Garden Spa at Babylonstoren is unlike any other. Relax in utter tranquillity and choose from a range of unique treatments; Hammam – an Middle Eastern steam bath, bamboo massages and facials all inspired by their flourishing garden.
